Health Professions

To practice as a physician, you are required to complete either an accredited Allopathic (MD) or Osteopathic (DO) program. Medical schools are typically 4 years long and are followed by a 2 year minimum residency before independent practice can be granted. It is important to look into the specific program that you are interested in because every program is slightly unique and may grant dual degrees. Common application requirements include:

  • Prerequisite courses finished
  • MCAT Test scores
  • Clinical/Volunteer experience
  • Recommendation letters
  • Personal statement
  • Secondary applications are common for medical program application processes and are usually requested by schools after the initial application is evaluated. Schools will usually start with an initial application with a centralized application service, then they will request a secondary application, hopefully an interview and finally an acceptance letter. Most programs require that you complete at least a bachelor's degree before matriculation into the program is granted.

The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) is the specialized entrance exam for medical school admissions. The MCAT test on your skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and knowledge of natural, behavioral, and social science concepts. Most programs require MCAT scores and are a heavily weighted portion of the application along with GPA.

Most medical schools use a centralized application service for admissions. For Medical Doctor (MD) programs, American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) is used for applications. For Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) programs, American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS) is used. Many schools require applications to be submitted through these services which verify application materials. Application materials may take up to 6 weeks to verify after all application materials have been submitted. It is important to keep track of deadlines and make sure materials are submitted in time to be verified for school application deadlines. There are fees starting at $160 for AMCAS and $195 attached to the AACOMAS application to keep in mind. The prices increase depending on the number of schools you apply to using the services.
